Thanksgiving Turkey Splash 2013

The La Jolla Cove Swim Club is a non-profit organization of open water swimmers. They sponsor free monthly and annual social swims. A few of these swims include the Polar Bear Swim on New Year’s Day, the Pier to Cove swim, and the Thanksgiving Turkey Splash.

La Jolla Thanksgiving Open Water Swim

There will be coffee and muffins on hand, but participants are welcome to bring traditional Thanksgiving dishes to share. Merchandise from the La Jolla Cove Swim Club will be available for purchase also including: jackets, vests, back packs, hats, swimming caps, t-shirts and more. Feel free to dress like a Turkey, swim like a Turkey or stay on the shore and gobble up goodies.

If you are unfamiliar with this stretch of water, visit their website. Or, talk to some of the club members and event coordinators for advice on certain obstacles such as rocks, currents and water temperature.

Fun, Exercise or Both!

The La Jolla Turkey Splash is not a competition with a set number of miles to complete the event. Swim at your own pace and whatever distance you are comfortable with. Just have fun and always put safety first. There are buoys placed at a quarter mile out and a half mile out. Remember, if you swim out to the quarter mile buoy, you have to swim back also. So it will be a half mile swim.

If you don’t know your limits, stay close to shore and learn what your limits are before venturing out too far. Lifeguards are on duty year round, generally from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. but their schedules vary with the seasons.
