School Overview:
The Bishops School, an independent coeducational college prep day school, founded in 1909 for students in grades 6-12. While stimulating and challenging students academically, the school believes that its role is to help young adults learn to be “morally discriminating and to define ethical standards.”
Following in the context of Episcopal tradition, Bishop teachers focus on how they teach; recognizing that how they teach plays a crucial role in how well students assimilate information. Most class sizes are a modest 14-16 students.
Bishop’s Upper School provides a disciplined study of academic coursework, while engaging in free-range discussions inspired by voices and concepts throughout history, literature, languages, science, mathematics and the arts.
Bishop’s Middle School offers a transition period between elementary and upper school, based on “building study and thinking skills, taking responsibility for one’s own education, and developing self-confidence and a sense of moral responsibility.” Additionally middle school students are exposed to a variety of arts and athletic co-curricular activities, as well as age-appropriate assemblies and speakers.
With 800 students, The Bishops School has a historically significant and beautiful campus – 11-acres situated steps from La Jolla Cove. Its purpose is clear: “to educate, in student-centered classrooms, citizens who will contribute their talents to the contemporary world in transformative ways.
